The festivities kick off on Wednesday, July 3 with a Fourth of July Celebration Boat Parade through Avalon’s back bays. Beginning at 6:30pm, parade watchers are encouraged to find a cozy spot and take in the spectacular sight of boats adorned with patriotic decorations as they parade by.

“It’s bittersweet, but I have to do it,” says Rev. William Kelly of his retirement from serving as pastor at St. Brendan the Navigator Parish in Avalon.

Welcome to July, friends. By now I hope you’ve settled in to island life and all the summer fun it provides. For many of us, that means spending time boating. As far as I’m concerned, the more time boating, the better.

The late William Hernandez, a brilliant man with notable worldly success, is most remembered for his selfless open-heartedness. The Pittsburgh and Avalon resident died at age 74 in January 2023. Since then, an unfamiliar stillness lingers in the family home on 64th Street.

If you frequent shore communities of southern New Jersey in the summer months, you have likely seen a northern diamondback terrapin – either a hatchling scrambling to seek refuge in the nearest vegetation, a female hastily crossing a road to nest, or a smaller-bodied male basking lazily on the bank of a tidal creek.
