Letter from the Editor
Dear Readers,
This is one of my favorite times of the year here at the shore. You can feel the energy as homes are reopened, businesses get set for the summer, lifeguards are back on the beach, and we have one of our biggest issues of the year. So, without further hesitation, let’s get this summer started!
Avalon’s Beach-Tag Ordinance Turns 50
For four generations of visitors to the Seven Mile Beach, beach tags are not only accepted, but for the most part expected when planning a visit. But that wasn’t always the case. The beach tag in Avalon celebrates its 50th anniversary this summer, one year after Stone Harbor, which became the first town in Cape May County to charge beach fees in the summer of 1971.
Events at a Glance
Join Stone Harbor for the official opening of the beach for the summer season, starting with the second annual Color Run. The course for the non-timed event is open to all ages and goes from 82nd Street to 95th Street. Following the run, Mayor Judith Davies-Dunhour and the Beach Patrol Captain Sandy Bosacco will host the beach-opening ceremony.
Surfin’ U.S.A.: 7 Mile Boardriders Thrilled to Compete in Nationals
South Jersey, best known as the beach playground to inland Pennsylvania, New Jersey and points north, was Boardriders heaven this offseason.
Hard-core Jersey surfers embrace the Northeast Atlantic waves like chilled, rolling wet blankets instead of the warmer surfer environs of California, Hawaii and Florida. But, make no mistake, the local Boardriders own the local shoreline.
‘Can I Come Back Here Every Year?’ The Helen L. Diller Vacation Home for Blind Children Has Been Creating Memories for 50 Years
Most magic numbers have to do with clinching a sports championship.
But this one is magic, period.
The number is 50, reached by the Helen L. Diller Vacation Home for Blind Children, as it launches a 50th operation year in June.

The Mighty Quinn: Monsignor Reflects on His First 60 Years in the Priesthood
Monsignor Liam Quinn reminisces as his 60th anniversary in the priesthood approaches.
“It was never a dull moment” on the family farm in Ireland and oftentimes as a priest here in the Garden State, the former pastor and now priest-in-residence at St. Paul Church muses.

The Borough of Avalon will honor its past and present servicemen and servicewomen during its Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony on Monday, May 30. Sponsored by American Legion Post 331 and the Borough, the parade will begin promptly at 9am at 32nd Street and Dune Drive and travel north to Veterans Plaza, followed by the ceremony.

Rock of Ages: After 50 Years, ‘The Geator’ is Still Heatin’ It Up with the Hits You Want to Hear
It was 50 years ago, the summer of 1972. Obviously, much has changed over that time here on Seven Mile Beach. Hurricane Agnes struck the East Coast in mid-June that summer; gasoline shot all the way up to 55 cents a gallon, which was pretty expensive after paying $2,078 for a new Ford Pinto.
Life After Basketball: Fran & Nancy O’Hanlon Are Right at Home in Avalon
Fran O’Hanlon was enjoying a night in the Bongo Room during Memorial Day weekend in 1986. While The Fabulous Greaseband played classic oldies, O’Hanlon was looking forward to a summer at the shore.
It was then that Avalon was about to become more than his favorite vacation destination. Sometime between “Woolly Bully” and “Hang On Sloopy,” it was about to become a lifestyle.

It seemed like such an innocent question at the time …
It is the first week of May and I am 45 minutes into a fun, freewheeling Zoom interview with Philadelphia sports media legend Ray Didinger when I say: “So the title of your most recent book is ‘Finished Business.’ Does that mean you’re thinking of retiring, or is it just a catchy title?”
