The Good Kind of Corona
As ubiquitous as the summer sun, Corona is the beer you think of when you think of the beach. You can thank the brand’s marketing department for that one. Since 1926, the company has been associating those iconic clear bottles with palm trees and sand, some top images that pop in your head when you think of vacations and relaxation.
Sounds of the Shore
One night last summer, obviously before COVID-19 hit, I was walking down 96th Street when I bumped into a piano-playing, singing buddy of mine by the name of Roy McCutchen. Way back in the day, I used to run these insane cabaret nights at a still-open-for-business bar called the Khyber Pass on Second Street in Philadelphia.
Kids Picks
It’s tough to be a kid right now. Home schooling wasn’t easy, and not being able to hang out with your friends was probably even harder. Thankfully, we are on the road to recovery, and hopefully things will start to feel close to normal again soon. In the meantime, there are so many new books being released this summer to help take your mind off of everything happening in the world.
Seven Mile Style: Casual Chic
If there is one thing we learned from the stay-at-home order, it was that we can spend each day being super comfortable and looking good at the same time. It’s All Good is your one-stop shop for all things comfortable for every member of the family. It even has matching outfits for kids and adults, which are perfect if you plan on getting some family pictures this season
Days Gone By: 60 Years Ago…
The Fourth of July was always a special day on the Seven Mile Beach. Over the years it has meant lots of things: fireworks at 80th Street in Stone Harbor, and if you go way back, it was fireworks at the 8th Street baseball field in Avalon; pool races at the Windrift; and motorboat races in Avalon’s Princeton Harbor in the 1930s.
Here’s the Dish with Executive Chef of The Diving Horse John Boswell
1. Where did you receive your training? I went to college at Drexel University and graduated with a culinary degree and a minor in entrepreneurship. While I was at Drexel, I did an externship at Alla Spina, a then-Marc Vetri restaurant.
Outdoor Entertaining: Wake Up & Smell the Strawberries
Happy summer, all! After an unreasonably cold spring, we sure are due for some summer sunshine to warm our shoulders and brighten our moods. I love opening the door to a bright sunny morning inviting me to a walk through my garden with the promise of a new day’s surprises – the strawberries that ripened overnight, the cucumber that appeared like delicious summer magic; it really is the best part of the day.
Summer Reading Tips
Moms and dads, I know that these last few months have been incredibly challenging. In just a blink, life as we knew it completely changed. No more going to the gym to relieve some stress, or even taking a walk alone for that matter.
Days Gone By
Here are a couple of Stone Harbor Beach Patrol lifeguards in front of their lifeboat and the Stone Harbor boardwalk. Yes, that’s a boardwalk! And can you see that fancy lifeguard stand in the background? This is probably around 1930.
How to Strengthen Our Immunity as We Reopen
This June brings the long-awaited reopening of our beaches, boardwalks, restaurants, salons, and eventually our gyms. We’re one step closer to getting back to normal.
DVD Divine Viewing Diversions: The Movies of the Summer of 2000
I readily admit that I’m biased, but from this vantage point nothing can compete with movies when it comes to vividly recalling or recreating the past.
Smilestones
John Richardson, an Avalon resident and Middle Township High School industrial-arts teacher, was honored by the school last year by declaring June 3 National John Richardson Day – a nod to his sense of humor, as he is known as the school’s prankster.
Financially Speaking: Fear or Faith, Which Camp Do You Fit In?
As I write this article on the historical Memorial Day (May 30), there are so many things going on. For those old enough, we remember Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act and changed Memorial Day to the last Monday in May on June 28, 1968.
Italy’s Legendary Brunellos
Brunello di Montalcino is famous for its bold and long-lived red wines. It is one of the most sought-after wines, not just in Italy but all over the world.
