Although Memorial Day weekend signals the unofficial start of the summer season when our island magically comes alive, we can’t forget to take time to honor and pay our respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms – the true meaning of Memorial Day.
Memorial Day Events
The Borough of Avalon and the American Legion Post 331 host the annual Memorial Day Parade from 32nd Street and Dune Drive, north to Veterans Plaza. The ceremony at the end of the parade route will include remarks from Mayor Martin Pagliughi and Post Commander Thomas McCullough in addition to the guest speaker, Senior Petty Officer Jesse Green.

There’s a well-known realtor on the Seven Mile Beach who for years has used this pitch: “Come for a week, stay for a lifetime.” Who knew that Avalon’s mayor, Martin Pagliughi, would take it so literally?
“I came to Avalon in the summer during college and never left,” Pagliughi says.
Meet the Candidates: Three Vie for Two Stone Harbor Borough Council Seats
The race is on for a pair of Stone Harbor Borough Council seats, and it won’t be ceremonial. Unlike many past years, in which candidates ran unopposed, three applicants are vying for two positions in the June 6 election. There is a campaign. There are stakes involved. Each of the candidates must defeat at least one opponent to grab a seat.

Going Strong at 100: Betty Keen Birthday Surprise Party with Daughter Sue and Many Friends
Avalon’s Elizabeth Boyd Rhodes Keen, better known as Betty, will officially celebrate her 100th birthday on May 24. But there’s already been more than one celebratory gathering honoring this lovely lady, thanks to her vivacious daughter Sue Keen.
Close to 100 guests joined Betty and Sue for a 100th birthday surprise luncheon at Avalon Golf Club’s Avalon Links Restaurant on April 23.

A Lifetime, A Legacy: Robert Taylor
Cape May County suffered a big loss with the passing of Robert Taylor at the age of 74. The Dennis Township resident, who grew up in Stone Harbor and served in the U.S. Army before starting his law career, died on April 28, 2022.
