Submit your entries for this annual contest May 15-31. Entries can be dropped off at the Avalon History Center, or mailed to 215 39th St., Avalon, NJ 08202. Judging will begin the first week of June, and winning entries will be on display through the end of June.

Stone Harbor Beach Opening Ceremony, 10am, 95th Street beach, shnj.org
Join Stone Harbor for the official opening of the beach for the summer season. The third annual Color Fun Run will take place, a non-timed event open to all ages from 82nd Street to 95th Street. Free T-shirts will be given to the first 200 participants. Following the run, Mayor Judith Davies-Dunhour and the Stone Harbor Beach Patrol Captain will host the opening ceremony. The location of the Color Run is subject to change, depending on the progress of the current beach fill. Join Captain Barrett Francis as he discusses local flounder fishery. Attendees will learn where to fish, tides, habits, baits, and rigs and time of year to make the most of the flounder fishing season at Seven Mile Beach and surrounding areas.

Explore the life of Charles Lindbergh with this lecture by Jerry McNeff. He will examine both Lindbergh’s exploits and his foibles.

Curious about honeybees and beekeeping? Jerry Futrell, owner of Golden Boy Honey in Rio Grande, will give a presentation about how to maintain a colony and how bees are the powerful pollinators of crops and flowers.

Spend the morning browsing the Avalon Garden Club’s 39th annual display of flowers and arrangements. There are seven artistic design classes and 12 horticulture classes. The public attending the show will vote for their favorite exhibit in each class with pennies supplied by the Garden Club. The awards ceremony will begin at 2pm.

Spend an evening with Flyers great Bernie Parent at Surfside Park as he discusses his book, “Unmasked: Bernie Parent and the Broad Street Bullies.” A member of the Hockey Hall of Fame and the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame, the goalie played 13 seasons with the Flyers, including the Stanley Cup seasons of 1973-74 and 1974-75. Parent won the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s top goalie and the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP both seasons.

Work your way to become a master builder on LEGO Thursdays. The Avalon Library will supply the LEGOS, you supply the imagination. Groups will work together to design and assemble a new project each session. All ages welcome. Participants under the age of 8 should be accompanied by a caregiver.

The Stone Harbor Garden Club is thrilled to announce the return of its Tour of Homes and Gardens after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic. There are six properties, including the newly renovated Pebbles, and two gardens. This project provides the financial resources necessary for the Garden Club to fund its beautification efforts in Stone Harbor.
