Whether you’re planning a date for two, a fun “last fling before the ring” with your bridesmaids and groomsmen or just deciding on a spur-of-the-moment Sunday afternoon this fall, Cape May County is home to several wineries and breweries, each with a unique taste and style.

Sometimes everybody wins.

Call it the Whiteway Walkway, a Ludlam Legacy or a perfect philanthropic storm. By any account, magic unfolded this summer at Stephen Ludlam American Legion Post 331 in Stone Harbor.

One if by sand, two if by sea.

The Stone Harbor and Avalon beach patrols piled up points on different surfaces in the 2018 lifeguard racing circuit: Stone Harbor displayed proficiency in events involving the beach, while Avalon was sharp in the water.

Over the years, Seven Mile Beach has become a premier destination for the rich and famous. We have seen the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Taylor Swift, Pink, John Oliver, Ron Jaworski, Dave Matthews, Ed McMahon and many more.

Two Avalon residents will be honored for their service and dedication to the community at the Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) Free Clinics of South Jersey’s 12th Annual Gala, which will be held Sept. 13 at The Flanders Hotel in Ocean City.

Join Ocean Galleries for the return of famed 16-year-old artist Autumn de Forest in her fourth appearance. The young artist has said she finds inspiration in the studies of dreams and psychology, and her works explore a variety of styles and themes, often using canvases larger than herself.

While some are sad to see summer go, others have come to enjoy September and October on the island and the perfect weather that comes along with it. Many stores and restaurants remain open and with the addition of two recently opened restaurants, along with a luxurious spa coming to Seven Mile this fall, we’re in for a treat this year.

There are many records in early colonial history of settlers defecting to join Native American society, so much that it became a major issue for colonial leaders. Guards were often posted to stop the outflow, and Pilgrims were so afraid of Native American influence that long hair was outlawed.

With lifeguard season having come to an end, we look back on this 1993 photo of Avalon Beach Patrol’s Craig Whitehead pushing off in a singles race off if the 32nd Street beach. Today, “Whitey” is a veteran Lieutenant on the patrol with more than 20 seasons of experience, a former South Jersey rowing champion and amazingly, still occasionally competes today – often against competitors half his age.

Whistle in teeth, sun block liberally applied, plan firmly in place, Fran Sutter first climbed to the top of a lifeguard stand on the 28th Street beach in Avalon in 1966. Fifty-two years later, in so many ways, his mission has not changed.

Tom Rossi is a bit of a modern-day Renaissance man. Not only is he the prosecutor in Sea Isle City, he is also a general contractor and has his hands in the oyster business. Now, Rossi can add a new vocation to the list.

Members of the Avalon Lions Club gathered at the Helen L. Diller Vacation Home for Blind Children on Aug. 16 for the club’s annual end-of-summer barbecue and presented the Diller Home with a $30,000 donation from the proceeds raised by the club’s annual Charity Golf Classic.

Last summer I was sitting on the beach eating an ice cream sandwich and watching a man in his early 30s hurtling his young daughter up and down in the surf. This was clearly entertaining her immensely, and every time Dad caught her, she would scream, “Again!”

It’s hard to believe that summer is over. Every year it seems to go by faster and faster! Now it’s time to go back to school, back to sports and just back to the craziness that the fall months bring.
