A Letter from the Editor

Dear Reader,

Welcome back! I’m thrilled to be the first to welcome you to the 2025 season here on Seven Mile Beach. It may be spring, with Easter just around the corner, but we all know summer isn’t far behind.

We’ve got plenty of entertaining and informative reading ahead, so let’s dive right in:

Planning your Easter festivities? Turn to page 15 for a full listing of church services across the island. And don’t forget to tear out our handy At a Glance events calendar – it’s your go-to guide for where to be and when, over the next few months.

Need your political fix? Dave Bontempo has you covered. He’ll introduce or reintroduce you to Team Avalon ahead of the May 13 election, then head south to Stone Harbor for a visit with new mayor, Tim Carney.

While we’re in Stone Harbor, Celeste Whittaker catches up with hometown star Bridget Ruskey, now the first Middle Township High School athlete to have three numbers retired. On the sports front, Hockey Hall of Fame writer Al Morganti shares a special retrospective on NHL great and longtime Avalon visitor Johnny Gaudreau, affectionately dubbed “Avalon Johnny.” He was a remarkable player and person.

Also remarkable: Our extensive coverage of the Stone Harbor Shiver by Sarah Schall. This beloved event has become a true rite of spring on Seven Mile Beach, and we’re excited to share the spirit with you. Over in Business Buzz, you’ll find all the latest on what’s new, moved, or refreshed in Avalon and Stone Harbor over the winter.

Of course, you’ll also find all the signature features you know and love – Must Haves, Smilestones, Times Talks, and party ideas from Kathy Todaro and Jean Miersch. And don’t miss Financially Speaking by Fred Dunbar.

This is my favorite time of year – when the island begins to bloom again, and businesses and homes come alive in anticipation of another unforgettable summer. Thank you, as always, for making the Times the most beloved publication on Seven Mile Beach.

See you Memorial Day weekend,

Sincerely,

Monica Coskey
