Memorial Day 2018
Something For Everyone This Summer at the Libraries, Even Books
The Avalon Free Public Library will be a community hub for culture, literature, and fun this summer. From symphony to Storytime and everything in between, the library will keep residents and visitors entertained and engaged.
Memorial Day Events
The Borough of Avalon and American Legion Post 331 will honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice during the annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony on Monday, May 28.
Events at a Glance
Meet the artist Saturday and Sunday from 7-10pm. Ocean Galleries is excited to welcome back renowned artist Josef Kote with his new exhibit, “Harmony in White,” featuring pieces created specifically for his shore customers in mind.
Beach Reads
The Beach Reads column for the Memorial Day edition is always my favorite to write. With the thought of summer bringing nice, long, hot beach days comes the thought of getting my summer reading list together.
Never Saw Anything Like It
There is a documentary running on HBO titled “Elvis Presley: The Searcher.” There’s not much about The King that I don’t know by now and although there’s really nothing new story-wise here, it does include photographs and live footage that I don’t recall having ever seen.
Fishing Around: It’s Time to Load Up On Flounder!
The best Memorial Day weekends at the Jersey Shore require your favorite hooded sweatshirt. While those west of the Parkway rock flip-flops and tank tops, the slightest easterly breezes send seaside temperatures into the low 60s due to the ocean’s cooler temperature. These cooler waters create interesting angling opportunities for fishermen fixing to fish over the next month.
Camps Your Kids Will Love
The bell rings and students are busting out the door on that final day of school. Summer is here, and the lazy days of summer greet us with the smell of sand and sea, the promise of ice cream and pizza, and the outlook of a blissfully empty calendar.
Kids Picks
It’s time to start the final countdown until school is out for the summer. We can’t wait for long beach days and games of tag until long after the sun sets. When the weather is nice, all you want to do is play, and we can’t blame you! But don’t let that summer slide happen to you.
Grilling What You Grow
It’s been a tough spring here in the Northeast, so many of us are way behind with our summer entertaining preparations. Tidying up the outdoor space and planting the vegetable garden while wearing a winter coat is just no fun.
Beach Tips For Parents: The Summer Slide
When I think of the “Summer Slide,” I like to think of a long slide with lots of curves that ends with a person being thrown into a pool. Unfortunately, there is a whole different meaning that refers to the amount of academic material that kids seem to forget when they have a long break from school.
DVD: Divine Viewing Diversions
Here are three recommendations, a trio of worthwhile, entertaining movies, in disparate genres, each released theatrically a few months ago and each rated PG-13.
