Letter from the Editor
Dear Readers:
Exactly when did it change from April showers … to April and May showers? In any case, hopefully we’re getting the rain out of the way early, clearing the way for a sunny, amazing summer. If you’re just getting down here, welcome back to our favorite place and the Summer of 2024!
Before you go any further, turn to our Events at a Glance section. We’ve got everywhere you’ll want to be, with a special section highlighting Memorial Day activities in both towns. Speaking of where you need to be … in the month of June, you’ll need to be everywhere to experience all that the Spring into Summer has to offer in Avalon, and we have all the details. One of the events planned is a 50th anniversary celebration of the Flyers’ first Stanley Cup championship, sponsored by the Avalon Free Public Library. Hockey Hall of Famer Al Morganti will tell you all about the June 15 event as he takes you back to that magical moment in 1974.
Speaking of 1974, not all moments were magical that spring 50 years ago. Dave Coskey looks back at two big topics that were dominating conversations locally that spring. Dave also looks at the first 75 years of the Harbor Theatre in Stone Harbor, a special and historic milestone.
Marybeth Treston Hagan helps us say goodbye to Pastor Dave as he retires in June. There’s no time for Tyler Wolf to retire as he fills a key role as a flight paramedic, and Dave Bontempo tells us about our own Flying Lifeguard. And Vicky Parente caught up with Michael McGrady out in California. Michael has a face that you’ll recognize from his dozens of television appearances. He is also a very accomplished artist, and his works are on display at Ocean Galleries.
If you aren’t already familiar with all the amazing things that happen at The Wetlands Institute, you will be after reading Lenore Tedesco’s story this month. Plus, of course we have all the features you’ve come to expect in each issue including Smilestones and Times Talks, plus sage advice on finance from Fred Dunbar, fitness from Michael Hauf, mental health from Kristen D’Amico, and anti-aging longevity from Seema Rathi Bonney.
Enjoy yourself but please be sure to be safe. And use lots of sunscreen – especially this early in the season. Please support our local shops and restaurants. They’re all working hard to help make your summer a memorable one.
Sincerely,
Monica Coskey
