Stone Harbor Logo Turns 50
Today, it’s as recognizable as anything around Stone Harbor. That’s probably because it was just about 50 years ago that the official emblem of Stone Harbor was designed and adopted. It was officially unveiled by Mayor William G. Lange on May 20, 1968. Initial plans called for the emblem to be used on Borough stationary and on police and other official Borough vehicles. The mayor noted that the emblem bears two things for which Stone Harbor has always been famous: On the left is a Comet sailboat under full sail, symbolic of the fact that Stone Harbor is the home of Comet Fleet No. 1. On the right is a heron, and Stone Harbor has always been considered home of the heron. The mayor said Councilman Dillwyn Wattis deserved credit for developing the emblem, with artistic assistance from Mrs. Harry Letsche. Several years in the making, Borough officials had long considered adopting an official seal. Several ideas rejected including seagulls in flight, which some felt could represent any seashore resort. According to Mayor Lange, “We wanted something distinctive to Stone Harbor. This project was given much thought. We had all kinds of ideas. Shapes and sizes. Many very good suggestions. The one finally settled on is one that we believe represents Stone Harbor.” This photo shows Mayor Lange admiring the first public sample of the emblem.
