Days Gone By

As the Stone Harbor Sunday Softball League wraps up its COVID-shortened 2020 season, we thought it would be fun to take a look back at the league’s roots. The Stone Harbor Sunday League dates back to the early 1970s when it was formed primarily as “restaurant/bar” Sunday league. The league has withstood the test of time and lots of changes in almost a half-century of competitive fun. This photo probably dates back to 1978 or ‘79. The Plumbugs team was formed by Stone Harbor Plumbing’s George Keating (Plumb) and Island Weed and Exterminating’s John Wade (Bugs). Eventually the core of this squad formed the Windrift team that won five league championships in the ‘80s and ‘90’s. There are a lot of familiar faces here including: Gary Williams, George Keating, Tom Harlan, Paul Dare, Gerald Anderson, George Keating Sr., Bob Scott, Bobby Williams, Jim Wallace, Herb Hornsby, Steve Mixner, Joe Garrison, Tom Rossman and Virgil Briles. Who can you pick out? Pretty impressive that they even had their own mascot.
