Elizabeth Gladden, who has grown up spending her summers in Avalon, was awarded a full four-year scholarship to college by the Navy ROTC program. She was selected for the prestigious Immediate Scholarship Reservation by the commanding officer because of her extraordinary academic achievements and her leadership qualities.

Beach Reads
August is here, and that means hot and sticky summer days are as well. When things are heating up all over town, it’s nice to hit the beach where you can sit your chair in the water, listen to the waves hit the shore, and catch up on a good book. There have been so many outstanding thrillers lately that it was hard to choose just a few. Each one of these is super chilling and will certainly cool you down!
Kids Picks
Summer days are meant to be filled with fun! Hopefully you are spending all of your time with family and friends on the beach, at the pool, or swimming in the bay. Summer days are also exhausting and it’s nice to take a day or even a few hours to just chill. Instead of picking up your electronics, pick up a good book instead. These new hit titles are sure to keep you entertained.
Financially Speaking: Can You Still Retire?
As I sit down to write today, I’d like to acknowledge that this day is special for two reasons: First, I met my wife Dee, 43 years ago while down the shore. Second, it’s Flag Day, a celebration of the American flag that President Woodrow Wilson established on June 14, 1916.
Days Gone By
Here’s a look back at Dune Drive between 22nd and 23rd streets from September 1977. All of these buildings are still standing, albeit with different business names. Let’s start with Danee’s Restaurant. Just several years earlier, this spot was known as The Drag Inn Steak Shop. Themed inside with racing memorabilia, it was a small luncheonette.
