August 2021
Letter from the Editor
Wow, what a summer! The weather has been outstanding! Each year, I can’t wait for summer to begin, but it seems that once we hit July 4, the rest of the summer just flies by. And now, it’s August – let’s enjoy it!
The Spirit of 75: As It Marks a Milestone Anniversary, Legion Post Still Has Its Comrades’ Backs
This is a birthday that goes beyond party hats, cake and candles.
It’s more about pride and prominence, the celebratory event to which the public is invited at 1pm Aug. 7 at the Stephen Ludlam American Legion Post 331, at the corner of 117th Street and Second Avenue in Stone Harbor.
Events at a Glance
The Borough of Stone Harbor will host the 6th Annual Go Green Fair in an effort to promote sustainability and make visitors aware of initiatives that can help preserve, conserve, and restore our beautiful world.
To Surf and To Serve: South Jersey Boardriders Group is Part of a New Wave
Community, culture, conservation. These three words have become the foundational pillars and the inspiration for a local nonprofit organization to recognize surfing as something that is more than just a sport.
Strokes of Genius: Josef Kote Returns to Ocean Galleries with His ‘Healing’ Exhibit
“He’s one of the best artists I’ve ever seen.”
That is high praise for Josef Kote coming from Kim Miller, the owner and operator of Ocean Galleries in Avalon and Stone Harbor for more than 30 years. Miller is very excited for Kote’s return to the gallery for “Healing,” his exclusive exhibit of new paintings from Saturday, Aug. 7 to Monday, Aug. 9.
The Great Whitey Way: Lifeguard Racing Icon Craig Whitehead Still Plays Big Part in Avalon
This is a victory lap, a sipped beverage in the cool of the evening or a highlight-reel recollection for Craig Whitehead.
The 33-year veteran of the Avalon Beach Patrol, affectionately dubbed “Whitey” throughout the South Jersey lifeguard circuit, can view the big race month of August several ways.
Business Buzz
Believe it or not, it’s August already! But that doesn’t mean there aren’t still more new businesses to explore here on Seven Mile Beach. This month, as you’re perusing the shops or heading out for a nice meal, make sure to pop into these just-opened offerings.
Last Call: The ‘Friday on My Mind’ Housemates Look Back Ahead of Reunion
Bon Jovi and Jennifer Nettles asked the question back in 2009, “Who says you can’t go home?” On Thursday, Aug. 12, we’ll find out for sure here on the Seven Mile Beach. At 4pm that day, a group of friends who summered together in a legendary group house in Avalon from 1975 through 1983 will be getting back together in town for what might be termed “Last Call” for the Friday on My Mind House.
Must Haves: Keeping Cool
August is here and hopefully this summer has brought you many sunsets, beach time, bay swims and ice cream runs. One thing is for sure, you can count on August to bring the hot, summer sun. We searched all of the great Seven Mile stores to find the newest products to help keep you cool so you can continue to enjoy everything Avalon and Stone Harbor have to offer!

The Secrets of Sand
Sand evokes wonderful memories. Burying your toes in the sand, sandy shoes on the back porch, building sand castles, or the glory of waves lapping up on the sand all have special meaning. The mere mention of the word “sand” can bring a smile to one’s face, a relaxing calm, and a longing for the shore.
Then & Now: The Avalon Anchorage Crew, 46 Years Later
Although there were lots of marine facilities on the Seven Mile Beach in the 1970s, the Avalon Anchorage Marina felt like the hub of the marine universe. Boat rentals, bait, tackle, repairs, fuel, lift service – Stanley Penska offered it all at the foot of 21st Street, along with a luncheonette that served breakfast and lunch.
Times Talk
Barbara Juzaitis is the new president of the Avalon Borough Council and Sam Wierman its vice president, as voted unanimously at the council’s annual reorganization meeting July 2.
Little Free Libraries: Book a Visit!
Everyone loves a good summer read, and the Seven Mile Beach’s libraries are great places to get books, movies and more.
But if you’re just renting your place for the week, or can’t get your hands on a library card, the many Little Free Libraries on the island are the solution.

Smilestones
You might have noticed that there’s a new guarded “beach” this summer in Avalon. And it happens to be the first guarded location that’s not on a beach in about 30 years. The Avalon Beach Patrol now has a guard positioned on the bay at 57th Street, the kayak beach.
Outdoor Entertaining: What Better Way to Start an August Day?
I love opening the door on August mornings. Warm sunshine invites me outside for a walk through my garden full of a new day’s surprises – the cucumber that appears behind a large leaf like delicious summer magic, the newly ripened tomatoes and peppers, and the fragrance of the homegrown herbs – it really is the best part of my day.
