The Shiver Delivers

The tradition of the Stone Harbor Shiver returned for its 10th year after a two-year hiatus. Hundreds of visitors and residents once again pounded towards the water during this St. Patrick’s celebration to support the Stone Harbor Chamber and Family Promise of Cape May County.

“We were so thrilled that after a two-year absence, so many people came out and participated, donated and had an absolute blast,” said Marnie Lengle, the event coordinator.

It all started with a Pre-Shiver Shindig at the Yacht Club of Stone Harbor, featuring a buffet dinner, raffle baskets, a silent auction and music compliments of DJ TY. This gave participants a chance to register for the shiver and browse the various raffle and auction items.

It wouldn’t have been a Stone Harbor Shiver if it hadn’t begun with Kegs and Eggs at Fred’s Tavern with breakfast sandwiches, drink specials and WHOA PHAT Brass Band complements of Diller Fisher Realtors. At the strike of 12, the band led the parade of participants down Third Avenue and up 96th Street.

The parade concluded at the Women’s Civic Center where, emceed by Nor’easter Nick Pitman, the costume contest took place. Contestants dressed in their St. Patrick’s Day best and other costumes shivered and shook their hearts out competing for the titles of Best Team Name (Failinger Strange Band), Best Team Costume (Gilligan’s Island and Failinger Strange Band tied) and Best Individual Shiverer (Right Turn on Red) among others.

After the contest shiverers gathered on the shoreline, waiting for the sound of the canon where at last they ran into the freezing Atlantic. For one last tradition, participants and passersby went back to Fred’s for a post shiver party, warming up with fresh food and drink specials while listening to The Quinn Brothers.
