Memorial Day 2019 Events
Avalon
The Borough of Avalon will honor its past and present servicemen and servicewomen during its annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony on Monday, May 27. Sponsored by American Legion Post 331 and the Borough of Avalon, the parade kicks off at 9am from 32nd Street and Dune Drive and proceeds north to Veterans Plaza, 21st Street and Dune Drive, where the ceremony will begin at approximately 9:45am.
The parade will feature many civic organizations, the Seven Mile Singers, the Patriot Brass Ensemble and bagpiper Michael F. Bell. The parade marshal will be Avalon Yacht Club Commodore Joseph Loeper. The ceremony will include comments from Post 331 Commander Tom McCullough, Mayor Martin Pagliughi, and the guest speaker, former Army Sgt. Robert “Bruce” Land.
Post 331 will conduct the flag raising and gun salute, and approximately 30 Borough officials and civic leaders will participate in a formal presentation of wreaths or living memorials in honor of the men and women of the United States Armed Forces who have given their lives for our country.
Stone Harbor
The Stone Harbor Volunteer Fire Department will honor fallen heroes during the annual Memorial Service at 11am at the Stone Harbor Firehouse. During the ceremony, members place names on the plaque at the memorial to honor firefighters who passed away during the year. Immediately following the ceremony, the American Legion Post 331 will sponsor its Memorial Day parade at noon featuring various community organizations. The parade will start at 99th Street and Third Avenue, proceed north on Third Avenue to
96th Street, then east to the Women’s Civic Club. Post 331 will perform a rifle salute and “Taps” on the beach, followed by a Veterans Ceremony and Open House at its headquarters located at 117th Street and Second Avenue.
