Days Gone By - Stephen Ludlam
As part of Memorial Day Weekend we take time here to remember Private First Class Stephen Ludlam, the first resident of the Seven Mile Beach to lose his life in the line of duty. Stephen was a high school senior who had just turned 18 when he was drafted into World War II. Sadly, the 92nd Street resident was killed in action in France on Jan. 25, 1945.
Shown here is U.S. Army Major George Abbott Jr. presenting Steve’s Distinguished Service Cross to his parents and grandmother in the studio of WFPG Radio on the Steel Pier in Atlantic City on Army Day 1946. Steve made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms. The Stephen C. Ludlam American Legion Post 331 in Stone Harbor is named in Steve’s honor.
