JERSEY SHORE PARTNERSHIP SALUTES THE PAGLIUGHIS

The Jersey Shore Partnership honored Avalon Mayor Martin Pagliughi and his wife Lynda for their decades of service in leadership positions with the partnership in June at its annual event in Sandy Hook. The Jersey Shore Partnership is an organization that lobbies for coastal issues in New Jersey, including a dedicated source of funding for sand for our local beaches. The partnership was founded in 1991 after a devastating storm on Halloween that eroded much of New Jersey’s beaches. Its mission is to guarantee that state and federal funding is available to protect New Jersey’s 127 miles of coastline.

CLASS RELEASES RESCUED DIAMONDBACK TERRAPINS FOR 32ND YEAR

The kindergarten class at Stone Harbor Elementary School took a trip to The Wetlands Institute in early June to release diamondback terrapins. The students participated in the annual Diamondback Terrapin Turtle Project, created by retired teacher Roberta Dean and continued by current teacher Brie Schenck.

This year marks the 32nd year that students have joined The Wetlands Institute in releasing terrapins into the back bays. During the nesting season for diamondback terrapins, TWI staff patrols the roads for injured or deceased turtles struck by motor vehicles. Undamaged eggs from the terrapin are retrieved and artificially incubated. The hatchlings are put in a year-long head start program conducted by Stockton University and brought back to the institute for release in the spring.

As students learn about the head start program, they also sell “turtle cookies” throughout the year, collecting funds to donate to the institute. This year, the donation was matched by Sturdy Savings Bank for a total of $350 toward the Diamondback Terrapin Project.

Students carried on this three-decade tradition and released the terrapins into the back bay, after naming each one and bidding them safe travels.
