There’s a brand-new bakery on the corner of 27th and Dune Drive where Kohler’s used to be, the 27th Street Bakery. You can stop in for seasonal favorites over Thanksgiving when the bakery hosts its opening weekend – Wednesday, Nov. 22; Friday, Nov. 23; Saturday, Nov. 25, and Sunday, Nov. 26 from 8am-2pm.

Owner Maeve McNamara is no stranger to the business or to Avalon. She grew up in Avalon, and now lives full time in her grandparents’ house on 9th Street. Her aunts owned Kohler’s Bakery throughout her childhood. She worked there for 10 summers through her teens and into her early 20s, which is how she got her baking expertise. She, along with her husband and co-owner, Andrew Stanton, are so excited for the full-circle moment of opening 27th Street Bakery.

“Andrew and I met bartending at Memphis Taproom in Fishtown, Philadelphia, and we both have a passion for quality customer service and creating a warm and welcoming environment that people want to come back to,” says McNamara. “That’s what we plan to create on this fantastic corner in what is now a historic building by Avalon standards! We plan to make seashore and Philadelphia-area favorites – think sticky buns, butter cakes, donuts, etc. Everything will be made fresh daily on premises using old-world, handmade techniques.”

Customers can grab a hot cup of coffee and fresh pastry, enjoy the spacious patio, and check out seasonal specialties available year-round such as key lime pie in the summer and pumpkin pie during the holiday season. The opening-weekend menu and pricing can be found online at 27thstreetbakeryav.com. Customers who can’t make it to Avalon for the holidays can also take advantage of shipping buns and holiday cookies across the country.

Says McNamara: “We are so excited to join the business community of the town I grew up working in, and bring both another breakfast option as well as a space for the community to gather and socialize.”
