An evening to benefit the Helen L. Diller Vacation Home for Blind Children. Lenape Lifeways: Introducing the First People of Pa., N.J., and Del.

This program explores the life and times of peaceful and progressive Native Americans during the time of Columbus. It compares their customs, history, and contributions with those of the Europeans and Colonial Americans, featuring a lecture/demonstration and interactive exhibits. Presented by Carla Messinger.

Just Passing Through: Migration at the Avalon Coastline

The Avalon coast sees an impressive migration spectacle every year, with thousands of animals stopping through. From the small monarch butterflies to the ospreys in the marsh, this lecture will discuss the journeys of these animals as the seasons change. It will also include a live monarch tagging, as available! Presented by Erin Rawls of The Wetlands Institute and co-sponsored with the Avalon Environmental Commission.

Hybrid “What’s It Worth” Appraisal Program

Author, auctioneer, appraiser, and radio show host Mike Ivankovich will introduce you to what determines value and reveal what your personal treasures are worth. 7 Mile Island Pickleball Classic

This charity tournament benefits the Avalon Lions Club and other organizations such as the Helen L. Diller Vacation Home for Blind Children. The tournament will include men’s, women’s, mixed, youth, and coed doubles events. All events will be in a round-robin format. The registration deadline is Sept. 4. Savor September Weekend

Savor September Weekend

Savor September in Stone Harbor with a full weekend of fun. Kick off the weekend on Friday with the Savor En Blanc from 6-9pm. Tickets are now available at the welcome center. On Saturday, 96th Street transforms into the largest showcase of food, wine and beer. Enjoy tasting tents, live music and local vendors from 11am-7pm.

Tim Kerr Charities Point-to-Point Bay Swim

This event benefits Tim Kerr Charities and is a great way to familiarize yourself with open-water swimming. The starting point is at the 23rd Street Public Dock on Ocean Drive. Participants will receive a swim cap, chip timing, and a premium Tultex hoodie. Check-in begins at 9:30am at the Avalon Yacht Club. A bib list will be emailed on Sept. 15. Registration is required. Medicare with Confidence

Turning 65 or wanting to learn more about Medicare? This educational seminar will provide information on Medicare basics, important terminology, enrollment periods, plan types available, and cost assistance. Medicare is not one-size-fits-all. You will also learn about the changes to Medicare in 2025 due to the Inflation Reduction Act. Attending this educational seminar will allow you to understand “Medicare with confidence.” Presented by Steven Bronfreund from the SMS Insurance Agency.

History Center Author: The Secret of Seven Mile Island

Author & illustrator Dan Thompson will share insights and details about his debut historical fiction novella, The Secret of Seven Mile Island, released in May 2024 by The Paper House Publishing. Inspired in part by cherished times spent at his parents’ home in Avalon since the 1980s, Dan will discuss why Seven Mile Island was the perfect setting for this story to unfold.

Movie Night at the History Center

Fall Puzzle Swap

Drop off your gently used jigsaw puzzles (limit 10) at the library between Oct. 1-11 and receive a ticket for the number you dropped off. On Saturday, Oct. 12, stop by the library from 1-3pm to exchange your ticket for the same number of new-to-you puzzles. All puzzles must be in the original box and have all of their pieces. Drop-in puzzle swaps are welcome after 2pm.

Fall Dune Grass Planting

Happy Halloween! Residents, make sure to register your home for the Trick-or-Treat route and someone from the Stone Harbor Recreation Department will drop off a wooden pumpkin to mark your house as a part of the festivities. Kids and families – pick up your maps at the 82nd Street recreation building and get ready for a night of fun!
