Believe it or not, gasoline was merely 32 cents a gallon when this photo was taken. Despite the low price, stations still conducted promotions to attract customers. One such contest was Sunny Dollars at Sunoco stations. Sunny Dollars was a promotional contest conducted by the Sun Oil Company in 1966. This was a collect-and-win game with instant winners. With each visit to a participating Sunoco station, customers received a paper game ticket. When unfolded, the ticket revealed two printed game pieces for two separate games. The goal was to collect game pieces and try to assemble certain combinations to win cash prizes from $1 to $1,000, or the grand prize: a new Chevrolet Camaro. In this case, Larry J. Max of Bethel, Pa., an employee of The Golden Inn (now ICONA Avalon), is handed a check for $1,000 by Tex Arnold, the manager of Elmer’s Sunoco Station (owned by Elmer Borger) at 29th Street and Ocean Drive. Today, the Sunoco station at that location is the only remaining service station on the Seven Mile Beach.
