Days Gone By - Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day weekend ... If you grew up in Avalon during the ‘60s and ‘70s, Labor Day weekend not only signaled the end of summer, but it also meant that it was time for the Sullivan’s end-of-season rental bike sale. Everyone wanted to get a great deal on a gently used rental bike, especially those cool tandem bikes. Each bike had a piece of tape around the frame with a number on it. People started “shopping” the bike lineup in mid-August. Then, as soon as Sullivan’s began accepting orders, you made sure that you reserved the number that you wanted. Amazingly, you still see several of these sturdy Schwinns around town. Great memories! You’ll find this photo and lots more like it in the Avalon History Center. Be sure to stop by and browse the great collection of photos and artifacts on display.
