Stone Harbor’s King of the Court: Patrick Kenny Is Also Its Greatest Fan
“Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go.” – Oscar Wilde
Time makes it impossible for Oscar Wilde to have ever known Patrick Kenny – or Pat, as his many friends refer to him. That’s a shame because had their paths crossed, Wilde no doubt would have been able to put a face to the first part of the line he wrote for a play 140 years ago.
The Crowds Are Gone, But There’s More Fun in Store
Summer is a great time to be here on Seven Mile Beach, but it isn’t the only great time. As the days become shorter and we say goodbye to the crowds who come for the beaches, we enter a stretch of cool breezes, yellow leaves, and even more island fun.
Must Haves: Fall Fashion/Back to School
Fall is quickly approaching, and you might not believe this, but this is one of the best seasons to be at the shore. The weather is still perfect, and town is a lot less crowded. Now you can head to your favorite restaurants without worrying about reservations and you are pretty much guaranteed to always get a great parking spot.
Racing To and Fro: Avalon Beach Patrol Commuters Go to Great Lengths
This is a different kind of Fab Four.
Dolan Grisbaum, Ryan Finnegan, Katie Scanlon, and David Giulian share a unique stage with the Avalon Beach Patrol community.
Unique because they move logistical heaven and earth to preserve their dual role of public guardian and lifeguard-racing participant.
Competing to Become Better Lifeguards
Invest in youth.
The Avalon Beach Patrol reaped the rewards from some of its college-age performers, while Stone Harbor gained a glimpse of its beach-safety efficiency during the summer of 2023.
Here’s a look at each patrol.
A Raft of Memories: 51 Years Later, Recalling the Search for a Young Girl Lost at Sea
The Davis family looked forward to their annual summer vacation as they piled into their Oldsmobile station wagon for their trek to the Jersey Shore in late July 1972. Car packed, Ronald and Shirley with their five children and two poodles departed Portage, a town of about 4,000 located in the coal region of Pennsylvania, for what would be a five- or six-hour drive to Pine Haven Campground in Ocean View.
He’s Not Parroting Anyone: Jimmy Buffett’s Lead Guitarist Has His Own Songs to Sing at Surfside Park
Soothing, reflective, and fun, the music and lyrics of Peter Mayer will echo through the night air at Avalon’s Surfside Park on Thursday, Sept. 7 when his concert kicks off festivities for “Pickleball Weekend” and winds down a summer full of music at the outdoor venue.
Calling All Former Avalon Lifeguards
The Avalon Beach Patrol has a proud tradition of protecting the borough’s beaches for more than a century. It is now asking for everyone’s assistance as the ABP and the Avalon Beach Patrol Alumni Association begin to assemble an all-time roster of guards.
Nine Long Months in Gitmo: Jonathon LaKose Is Back After Coast Guard Deployment to the Notorious Base in Cuba
It’s fitting for Jonathan LaKose to be profiled in an Endless Summer edition.
Life may feel like an endless summer for this multifaceted Stone Harbor resident, who gains a small breather here between a concluded U.S. Coast Guard deployment and resumption of duties as a police officer in Haverford Township, Pa., in the fall.
Restaurant Profile: Bobby Dee’s Rock‘N Chair Restaurant
Bobby Dee’s Rock’n Chair Restaurant is celebrating a milestone anniversary this year. It was 20 years ago that the DiPeso family acquired the Rock’n Chair and added “Bobby Dee’s” to the name that was already known and loved throughout Seven Mile Beach.
The Miraculous Monarch Migrants: Our Annual Visitors Are Coming Through, and They Need Our Help
It’s fall in Cape May, and that means one thing: It’s time for the great migrations of wildlife headed south to warmer climates and abundant food.
Cape May sits on one of the world’s great migration corridors, and in addition to being on one of these great highways, this narrow peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay is also an important stopover point. Think of it as a great truck stop on an interstate system.
Times Talk
Tony Newshel, who has been a member of the Avalon Home and Land Owners Association leadership team since 2017, was elected the group’s president for the 2023-24 season. Four new trustees also were brought aboard in the August election.
Now You See Him: Magician/Mentalist Mark Zacharia Appearing (So to Speak) in Avalon

Smilestones
Spread over several bayside properties on Princeton Harbor in Avalon, it just may be the biggest party on the island every summer, and it’s become a tradition on the Seven Mile Beach. The event formally known as Dave Day this year was held Aug. 19.
