Mare at the Emmys

If you spent Sunday nights in April and May drawn into the always compelling, sometimes comical, and ultimately devastating events in the life of Delco detective Mare Sheehan, you won’t be surprised to learn that HBO’s “Mare of Easttown” has been nominated for 15 Emmys. Among those categories are Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie (Kate Winslet) and Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series (Berwyn native — and Avalon’s adopted native son — series creator Brad Ingelsby). Hey, Ingelsby vacations with his family here on Seven Mile Beach every August. That counts, right?

Needless to say, we’ll be watching on Sunday, Sept. 19 when as the awards are doled out and we hope “Mare” scoops up all 15. We’re rooting for Ingelsby, Winslet, and fellow nominees Julianne Nicholson (Lori), Jean Smart (Helen), Evan Peters (Det. Colin Zabel) and the costume designer who dressed Kate in that Ocean City hoodie. Jersey Shore Proud — Yes!

In Mare Sheehan, Ingelsby created a character of gritty authenticity, brought to life by Winslet’s astounding, in-your-face portrayal. Mare is so real, in fact, that we can picture her in the audience at the Emmys. Just imagine that Mare is invited to the big event because the story of her life garnered so many Emmy nominations.

Play along with us:

  • Who would Mare bring as her “plus one”? Boyfriend Richard? Mom Helen? Grandson Drew?

  • What would Mare wear? A dress she pulled out of her closet right before she caught the plane to L.A.? A new ensemble from Macy’s? Or maybe from Goodwill?

  • How would she toast a “Mare of Easttown” victory? With Rolling Rock? Wawa coffee? Or a gallon of milk?

  • What TV star would Mare most want to meet? Get real—Mare doesn’t waste time watching TV!

  • Would Mare hit one of the Emmy after-parties and choke down some of those weird L.A. appetizers? (And, true to form, would she locate a piece of upholstered furniture in which to stash the remains of an inedible canapé?) Or would she go looking for a cheesesteak? Can you even find a cheesesteak in L.A.? We mean a real one.

Mare’s intense saga captivated viewers way beyond Delaware County and Chester County last spring. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show drew “a first-night audience of 3 million viewers across all platforms and it grew its audience every week after its premiere. HBO also said the finale was the most-watched episode of an original series on streaming platform HBO Max over its first 24 hours.”

Although many fans are craving more, a second season doesn’t appear likely at this time. But there is some good news: The Reporter goes on to add that following the “breakout success” of “Mare of Easttown,” Ingelsby has signed a three-year deal with HBO to develop new projects. All of us at Seven Mile Times can’t wait to see where Ingelsby will take us next.
