The Lions Care: Avalon Club’s Charity Golf Tourney Raises $66,000, Honors the Late Chuck Covington

The Avalon Lions Club raised $66,000 to be donated to 18 Cape May County charities through its 15th annual charity golf tournament held June 24 at the Union League National Golf Club in Middle Township.

Participants were offered lunch beforehand, in addition to a selection of snacks and beer on the course. The tournament also offered an open bar and included guest appearances by Eagles great Mike Quick and ESPN bracketologist Joe “Joey Buckets” Lunardi.

After everyone had played their 18 holes, the participants were treated to dinner and a silent auction featuring jewelry, athletic gear, golf accessories, and an overnight stay at Union League National’s course cottage. The silent auction raised a new high in revenue, thanks to the silent auction committee chaired by Sue Houser Winant and Mina Raskin.

Among the highlights was the awarding of a new grand prize, the Chuck Covington Cup. The cup honors the late former Avalon Lions president and a founding member of the organization in 2002. Mr. Covington, who died last summer at 89, was well connected to the Avalon community, serving on the Avalon Borough Council for 28 years. He was also a member of the St. Brendan the Navigator Parish, the Helen L. Diller Vacation Home for Blind Children board of trustees, the Avalon Yacht Club, and a volunteer with the Avalon Fire Police. In Mr. Covington’s memory, the Lions welcomed the Covington family to present the crystal cup and enjoy a day of friendly competition.

Three Avalon Lions members, Sue White, Kelly McHugh, and Nina Ansel worked tirelessly to plan and execute the tournament. Following its immense success, all are looking forward to seeing the Chuck Covington Cup become an annual prize.

McHugh deemed the day a tremendous success. “The three chairpersons were glad to see the event come together successfully. We had a fabulous Lions committee that helped us behind the scenes, and the community offered support,” she said.

“This year, we were also very excited to be at a new venue. We received lots of support from our sponsors and the Union League. The event was extremely rewarding and fulfilling for our committees.”

In addition to The Union League of Philadelphia, the Avalon Lions Club would also like to recognize the outing’s sponsors, without whom the event would not have run smoothly. Sponsorships from generous organizations like Worldwide Jet, the Schanz Family, Brandywine Builders, and Compass Beach to Bay made the event possible.

The annual Avalon Lions golf outing proved to be an enormous success. After welcoming more than 150 golfers, the club is excited to offer monetary support to local charities. The club looks forward to hosting the 2025 outing and welcoming new and returning golfers to next year’s tournament.7 Mile Island Pickleball Classic
