Adult Craft Kit Registration: Paint-By-Number Sea Turtle

Bring your love for art into the comfort of your own home! This month features a Paint-By-Number Sea Turtle. The kit will be available for pickup starting on Aug. 15. Avalon property owners may register beginning Aug. 1. All others may register beginning Aug. 8. To register, please call 609-967-7155 or stop by the library circulation desk. Must be 18 years or older. Supplies are limited. Be sure to pick up your craft kit before the end of the month!

Ocean Galleries Exhibit: “Beyond the Brush”

Featuring impressionist painter Elena Bond and abstract expressionist Bette Ridgeway, they create beautiful masterpieces guaranteed to mesmerize you. Enjoy an exclusive collection of paintings, created and curated for the “Flow” exhibition, featuring original artwork from both artists, with additional mixed media from Elena Bond. Art will be on display throughout the weekend and patrons are welcome to peruse the exhibit anytime during gallery hours, 10am-9pm. Avalon History Center Lecture: George Washington

Our first President, George Washington, was a big man – literally and figuratively. Guiding our country through the Revolutionary War, he was a great leader of his day. The lecture will cover Washington’s leadership skills while pointing out some of his quirks. Presented by Jerry McNeff.
Viewing Party & Food Truck Festival

The Borough of Stone Harbor is hosting the annual Food Truck Festival for those who do not have access to a bayfront home to watch the Festival of Lights Boat Parade. A variety of food trucks will be on location, along with a wine and beer garden. Please bring your own chairs.
Festival of Lights Boat Parade

The Yacht Club of Stone Harbor’s Festival of Lights boat parade is a twinkling tradition in Stone Harbor. The boats will travel along the basins on Stone Harbor’s waterways. The after-party is open to YCSH members and up to four guests per member, and to Boat & Dock participants and up to four guests per dock or boat owner. The after-party is not open to the general public. Attendees must be 21 or over to attend and must wear wristbands. Please visit ycsh.org for more information and registration.
MidAtlantic Men Concert

National Night Out is designed to enhance the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement. Pop-up @ Trendz: Walters Faith Collection

Visit Trendz for its jewelry pop-up featuring the Walters Faith collection. Walters Faith was founded in 2013 by Mollie Faith Good and Stephanie Walters Abramow. Their pieces combine elegant and timeless elements while proving to be a red-carpet favorite worn by celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Priyanka Chopra, and Kendall and Kylie Jenner.

Bay Atlantic Symphony: Latin Rhythms of the Americas Concert

Experience the beauty and magic of contemporary rhythms from the Americas with a quartet of soloists for the Brazilian Suite Retratos. Fabio Oliveria, marimba master, solos on the instrument’s magical sounds along with the band that includes a four-string Cavaquinho, a seven-string guitar, a Brazilian Pandeiro fame-drum, and a nine-piece string ensemble.

Landscape Design with Pollinators & Birds in Mind

Taught by Pat Sutton (educator, author, and long-time wildlife gardener), the first half of the workshop will cover resources and a slide program about the topic. During the second half of the workshop, the group will brainstorm the projected images of each participant’s rough sketch, resulting in participants heading home with ideas and plans to enhance each of their properties for pollinators and birds. Registration is required and begins Aug. 2. To register, please call the library at 609-967-7155 or stop by the circulation desk. Space is limited. At registration, participants will receive Pat Sutton’s handout, which includes instructions on creating a sketch of their property required for the class. Well before the workshop, participants should create a sketch of their property, then clearly mark their name in large, bold letters on the sketch, then photograph the sketch, and e-mail the jpg or pdf scan to Pat Sutton (Pat’s e-mail is at the top of her Landscape Design handout). In the e-mail subject line, they should enter: “Landscape Design – August 16 – their full name.”

Delve into the themes of friendship, obsession, identity, and resilience as they talk about their creative processes and more. Q&A and book signing to follow. Tim Kerr Charities: Cedar Island 5K Swim

This 5K Swim starts and finishes at Avalon Yacht Club, and the course is designed to be going with the tide throughout the event. Swim all the way around Cedar Island, a marsh island at the north end of Avalon’s back bay. In addition to the race, homes along the bay will be out on their docks cheering you on. Awards will be presented to the top five male and female, masters, and grand masters finishers only. Athlete check-in and body marking are at the Avalon Yacht Club race day only from 9-10:30am. Swimmers will receive a backpack, a comfortable Tultex T-shirt, custom DeFeet socks, an event swim cap, and a branded event finisher’s towel. The event is limited to 300 participants. Dr. Doug Tallamy: Next Steps in Nature

Dr. Tallamy will address common questions from readers and those interested in the Homegrown National Parks initiative. Topics include ecological landscaping, biodiversity, invasive species, keystone plants, supporting wildlife, and more. This presentation will inspire and motivate you to restore ecosystem function where you live, work, play, worship, and farm. Tallamy is an award-winning author and the T.A. Baker Professor of Agriculture in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware. Q&A and book signing to follow. Co-sponsored with the Environmental Commission.
