Letter from the Editor

I don’t know about you, but it always seems to me that after July 4, the summer just flies by. Let’s make a pact: We’re going to slow this summer down … at least a bit. That way we can all continue to enjoy the amazing weather and linger on the beach until the sun begins to set back over the bay.

Time will no doubt fly when you begin to explore all the great features in this issue of the Times. Vicky Parente puts on her cowboy boots and kicks things off with a close-up look at Stone Harbor’s own Holdyn Barder. He’s taking the country music world by storm and spent time here in July making his next music video. And we go from music videos to best-sellers as Mary Lamb tells us about the blockbuster authors the Avalon Free Public Library is bringing to Surfside Park this month.

Be sure to check out our special She Shops section this issue. We feature the trendiest shops on the island. If you’re planning to do any shopping anytime soon, here’s your road map.

Did you hear about the white ibis that came to Avalon around Easter? It’s an unusual phenomenon, and Devin Griffiths from The Wetlands Institute explains why. And please join us in welcoming Curt Hudson to the Times. Curt is a renowned photojournalist in the Philadelphia area and a lifelong fireman. He uses that expertise to look at the lifesaving members of the Stone Harbor Fire Department, which is celebrating its 110th anniversary.

Dave Bontempo does double duty this month. First, he takes a close look at Stone Harbor’s David Giulian, a member of the Avalon Beach Patrol and a standout athlete on the local high school scene. He also spotlights the Good family, which has decided to close its store, It’s All Good, after 20 successful years.

Plus, all of the other features you’ve come to expect each issue, like our calendar of the must-see and must-do events; Fred Dunbar’s Financially Speaking; Times Talk, and our Smilestones, which always provide a smile or two.

As always, thanks for reading the Times. We value all of our many readers. And please continue to support our small-business owners who help to make Seven Mile Beach so special. A final thought: Make time to enjoy some of the most beautiful days of the year this August.
