Fishing with the Mayor

Calling all fisherkids! Children ages 5-12 are invited to join avid fisherman Mayor Marty Pagliughi for this annual event. Sign up ahead of time and enjoy a morning of baiting and fishing. No equipment necessary, all poles and bait will be provided!

Avalon National Night Out

The Avalon Police Department and Avalon Recreation are hosting another spectacular National Night Out event with carnival games, prizes, face painting, characters, and live entertainment from the Independence Day band. After the event, stay for the weekly beach movie, “Jaws.”

“Transcended” Josef Kote Artist Exhibit Artist Receptions

Renowned artist Josef Kote returns for his sixth solo exhibition at Ocean Galleries with his latest “Transcended” exhibit, featuring all new artwork depicting New Jersey coastal scenes, Philadelphia cityscapes, plus scenic and family portraits. Receptions with Kote will be held on Friday, Aug. 5 and Saturday, Aug. 6 from 6-9pm.

Composer, educator, and Bay Atlantic Symphony keyboardist Chuck Butler joins forces with Bay Atlantic bassist Rich Kurtz and guitarist Brian Varhelyi to discuss the evolution of rock music, with a focus on the effect that innovations by Elvis, The Beatles, and Led Zeppelin had on the generations of musicians that followed. Authors at Surfside: Emily Giffin

The Avalon Free Public Library hosts international best-selling novelist Emily Giffin’s appearance. Dubbed “Atlanta’s modern-day Jane Austen” by Vanity Fair Magazine, Giffin will discuss her new novel, “Meant to Be” – a story of a restless golden boy and a girl with a troubled past. In the case of inclement weather, this event will move to Avalon Community Hall.

AHLOA Annual Meeting

Join the Avalon Home and Land Owners Association for its annual meeting starting with refreshments and breakfast at 9:30am. The featured program will begin at 10am with Mayor Martin Pagliughi addressing the “State of the Borough of Avalon” as well as introductions of new AHLOA members, and updates by AHLOA president Lynne Cruser. A Q&A session will follow the mayor’s presentation. Plus, the winning bicycle bidder will be announced!

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Wedding of the Sea
10:30am, 82nd Street Recreation Complex & Beach

Join Pastor William Kelly of St. Brendan the Navigator Parish for the annual Wedding of the Sea celebration at the 82nd street recreation field. There will be an open-air mass, starting at 10:30am, followed by a procession to the Sea. Father Kelly will then go out on a boat with the Stone Harbor Beach Patrol to bless the sea.

Authors at Surfside: Adriana Trigiani

Join the Avalon Library for its second featured author, best-selling author Adriana Trigiani. Reviewers have called Trigiani a “comedy writer with a heart of gold,” and her books “tiramisu for the soul.” Trigiani will discuss her new novel, “The Good Left Undone.” In the event of inclement weather, this event will move to the Avalon Community Hall.

Reeds & Seeds Watermelon Festival

More than a century ago, the Shelter Haven Hotel celebrated its grand opening with a watermelon-themed event. The Reeds, which now occupies the site, continues the tradition by hosting a family-fun event at the Water Star Grille including watermelon-inspired activities and refreshments, live entertainment, and a ton of fun. Signature events include a watermelon-eating contest, the crowning of the Reeds & Seeds King and Queen, games, prizes, crafts, carvings, and more!

Beachside Science Lecture: “Sea Creatures with Amazing Features”

Though large marine mammals get all of the attention, there are thousands of amazing animals of all sizes in our ocean. The Wetlands Institute will discuss some of the many sea creatures that can be found locally – from friendly crabs to slimy fish, and everything in between! This event is a collaboration between the Avalon Environmental Commission and the Avalon Free Public Library.

Lecture: Shades of Our Past: Martha Gellhorn | 3pm, Avalon History Center

Hear from Martha Gellhorn (as portrayed by Lee Ann Rose) on what it was like for female war correspondents in WWII and of her brave daring act to stowaway on a ship to Normandy not to miss the “big story.” Especially when it kept her away from her then-husband, Ernest Hemingway.
