Avalon Baby Parade - 5:30pm Registration at Shamrock Deli, 21st and Ocean Drive; 6:30pm parade down 21st Street to Veterans Plaza
Calling all cherubs and chubby-cheeked toddlers – the Avalon Baby Parade returns on Thursday, Aug. 2. Register your babies and their floats, bikes and more starting at 5:30pm in the parking lot of Shamrock Deli on 21st and Ocean Drive. Judging will take place prior to the parade, which will begin promptly at 6:30pm. Awards and prizes will be distributed following the parade at Veterans Plaza, followed by a performance by Boy In Black (a Johnny Cash Tribute Band).

Avalon Players Perform “Mary Poppins Jr.” - Aug. 2-4 at 7pm, Aug. 5 at 5pm, Avalon Elementary School
As the Avalon Players celebrates its 50th anniversary, young island residents and vacationers will perform “Mary Poppins Jr.” with director Jen Creed. Every child who auditions receives a part. Tickets are $7 in advance or $8 at the door. All tickets are general admission. Advance tickets on sale July 30 from 6-7pm at the school’s gymnasium.

Author Lecture with James R. Fitzgerald - 6pm, Avalon Free Public Library
James Fitzgerald is an active criminal profiler and forensic linguist who served more than 20 years with the FBI as a Supervisory Special Agent. His lecture will feature details from his latest book, “A Journey to the Center of the Mind, Book III: The (First Ten) FBI Years.” Fitzgerald has investigated homicides, sexual assaults and other violent crimes, and had a pivotal role in arresting the Unabomber.

Festival of Lights Boat Parade - 8:30pm, Yacht Club of Stone Harbor, 9001 Sunset Drive
Join in on this annual celebration featuring an evening parade of more than 30 boats decorated to the 2018 theme of “Around the World.” Boat participants will also enjoy a tour of Stone Harbor basins and a number of decorated dock properties. 4th Annual Stone Harbor Surf & Turf 5-Miler & 1-Mile Beach Run - 6:45am registration, 8am race, 82nd Street Recreation Fields
This family-fun race features the first 2½ miles on the beach starting at 80th Street, south to Stone Harbor Point and back, with the final 2½ miles on the road. Kids and relay participants are encouraged to join. A 1-mile beach run is also included.

7th Annual Reeds & Seeds Watermelon Festival - 10am-1pm, The Reeds at Shelter Haven
More than 100 years ago, the Shelter Haven Hotel celebrated its official launch with a watermelon-themed party. The Reeds at Shelter Haven revived this summer event and all ages are invited to attend. Voted one of the Top 100 Swims in the USA, this challenging 5K course starts and finishes at the Avalon Yacht Club. The swim is self-timed and awards are given to the top five male and female, masters and grand masters finishers.
