THE SPOILS OF VICTORY

Some members of the Avalon Beach Patrol pose with trophies earned in the 1980 South Jersey Lifeguard Championships. The ABP went to Brigantine that year and brought home its third team championship, and first since 1974. In all, the Avalon Beach Patrol has captured eight South Jersey team championships. Shown here in this photo, taken behind police headquarters at 32nd Street are (from left) Ed Flory, David Kerr, Avalon Police Chief Joe Foley, ABP Captain Murray Wolf, Frank Reilly and Dan O’Malley. And yes, that’s the same David Kerr in whose memory the Kerr Memorial Lifeguard Championships are named. The Kerr Memorials this summer will be contested on July 29, on the beach at 36th Street. There is no cost to attend this event.
