What Do You Love About Avalon?

Why do I love Avalon? My love started at a young age. Like many who reminisce as I do, I started life as a shoobie. My grandparents lived on 37th Street and it was the unique smell of the seashore that would hit me when we crossed over the big bridge on Avalon Boulevard. My mom would always wake me up after our drive from Philadelphia, roll down the windows and say, “We’re here!” Like many who fall in love with the shore, my family turned our frequent vacations into a permanent residence when I was in first grade. It was a great year for me as I met my lifelong best friend and even my husband in a small class in Sea Isle City. The rest is history, as they say, and I honestly fall more in love with it every year.

I love the food: ice cream, seafood, pancakes, pizza, hoagies (and the cocktails).

I love that this is a town that sings true to the theme song from “Cheers,” “Where everybody knows your name.”

I love the noise when the houses fill up in the summer, and I love the silence when they empty in the winter.

I love the buzz of July 4th weekend, the smell of burgers and hot dogs, and the pop of fireworks.

I really love the holidays here.

Have you ever experienced Thanksgiving weekend at the shore? It’s a scene straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting with ice skating, caroling, tree lightings, snow and simple family fun.

Most of all, I love having two toddlers growing up here, who get to experience everything that I love all over again!

And so, I direct the question to our readers: What do YOU love the most about this little shore town?

The Avalon Chamber of Commerce and the 7 Mile Business Community Association are teaming up to launch a summer video contest, asking residents and visitors alike, “What do you love about Avalon?” Participants are encouraged to send in their family-fun videos to the official Avalon Tourism Facebook page (facebook.com/avalonnewjersey) or upload them to social media using #ILoveAvalonNJ.

Entries will be up for voting for the remainder of the summer, and the winner will receive a “Best of Avalon” gift basket. The best videos will be used for Avalon’s 2018 promotional material. Your simple love of Avalon could make you famous! This could be your big break!
