Lions’ Golf Classic Raises $50,000
The Avalon Lions Club raised $50,000 with its ninth annual Charity Golf Classic on June 25 at the Avalon Golf Club. A field of more than 140 helped support the Helen L. Diller Vacation Home for Blind Children.
“It was very rewarding to see the community gather for the Diller Home and Cape May County charities, making such a fuss and contributing their time and money for the success of this event,” said Lions Club Vice President Mike Sowers, who served as the event chairman. “Our volunteers deserve a shout-out for working so hard all year for this.”
The golfers kicked off the day by enjoying a barbecue lunch and browsing the silent-auction and raffle items. After the tournament, participants indulged in an upscale dinner followed by a live auction hosted by 6ABC meteorologist Chris Sowers and retired CBS3 reporter Robin Mackintosh. Tours of the CBS3 broadcast facility and a live viewing of the noon news show were auctioned off to the highest bidders. A 6ABC autographed banner, a basketball signed by the Villanova basketball team and an overnight stay in Resorts Casino were just a few of the many items up for auction.
The Lions Club is dedicated to serving others and those who help them in their mission. Sowers said the club wanted to show their gratitude to the golfers by gifting them with an Antigua performance pullover and a goody bag. In tradition, golfers were also awarded prizes for their performance such as an $100 gift certificate to Avalon Golf Club Pro Shop and cash rewards.
The tournament was sponsored by various businesses and organizations - including premier sponsor World Wide Jet and several Eagle sponsors such as 7 Mile Publishing and Creative, Wawa Corporate Office, Holy Redeemer Health Systems, JAK Securities, the Flynn Family and Ocean First Bank.
The Avalon Lions Club has more than 150 members and continues to grow each year. Throughout the year, the organization supports local charities in Cape May County including CARA (Coalition Against Rape and Abuse), CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), Habitat for Humanity, Lazarus House, Holy Redeemer Food Bank and Toys for Tots.
The Lions Club’s Pasta Night will be held Oct. 15 at the Windrift Hotel Resort.
