Is That You in the Avalon Anchorage Photos?

Did your family ever begin or finish a fishing trip at the Avalon Anchorage Marina in the 1970s and ’80s? Then you should plan on visiting the Avalon History Center beginning Aug. 11. That’s the date when the History Center, which is located at 215 39th St., will open an exhibit consisting of more than 400 photos from Stan and Lorraine Penska, the former owners of Avalon Anchorage. The Penska family had a tradition of taking photos of anglers and their catches and posting the photos on the Anchorage walls. This particular collection of photos, which was restored by Seven Mile Times, were taken from 1972 through 1983 and have been in storage for more than three decades. The classic black-and-white snapshots are filled with smiling faces of kids, grandkids, moms, dads, grandparents and friends. Many of the children pictured in the photos are likely parents in their own right today. The photo collection offers a priceless look back at hundreds of families enjoying the Seven Mile Beach in the 1970s. Chances are, most of those featured in the photos don’t even remember their photos being taken, so this is an opportunity to take a trip back down memory lane. Stan Penska, the silent, smiling patriarch of the Anchorage from 1959 through 1985, brought the photo collection to Seven Mile Times several years ago after many years of storage. What a perfect way to relive those carefree days of the ’70s! The Avalon History Center is open daily and admission is free.
